At the time I was interested in strict standards compliance, the dom builder while adding overhead did follow proper standards when appending elements to the DOM. This article is two years old now and I've since moved on and currently use jQuery and its <a href="http://plugins.jquery.com/project/appendDom" rel="nofollow">appendDOM plugin</a>. The reason I use this over innerHTML is because it's cleaner in the code and easier to maintain.

If you're going to use non-standard procedures to dynamically modify the DOM, why not just use the tried and true innerHTML (since it pretty much works on every browser that matters) instead of adding the overhead of DomBuilder?

Since trying to focus on an element that's hidden gives you an error (the same error if you try to focus on a disabled input element) you could try this:

function isElementHidden(field) {
	try {
 field.focus();
	} catch() {
 if (field.disabled) {
 field.disabled = false;
 returnVal = isElementHidden(field);
 field.disabled = true;
 return returnVal;
 } else {
 return true;
 }
	}
	return false;
}

Believe me, I know, I used to work on the land line/Internet side at Telus, we used to get our customers to do stuff that was completely unnecessary in order to calm them down or get them to do stuff without questioning. For example if they didn't appear that knowledgeable I would get them to unplug the cord from the phone/modem and wall jack, reverse it, this ensured that they had both ends secure since 99% of the time they didn't actually check to see if the cord was properly plugged in they just responded, "yes it's plugged in," after a cursory glance.

As a result, I will jump through a certain amount of hoops to placate a telemonkey, but I often try to gain their respect at the start of calls by listing the troubleshooting steps I've already taken, which is often above and beyond the first level of support, it's been about a 50/50 experience for getting knowledgeable reps on the line and if I'm lucky I get to skip the crap log a ticket and eventually get contacted by 2nd tier support, or if I'm luckier they know an immediate fix.

Good news, however, since publishing this article my last replacement has lasted me the entire time... the Voice Recognition software no longer works, I think if I do a hard reset and reinstall the firmware it might work again but I don't want to reload the third party software and hacks I've put on the phone and it's not that big of a problem.

I suspect the reason they suggest "leaving it out for an hour then trying again" is to allow the operator (you) of the phone to calm down. There is no noticable difference in the Q by taking more than a second than 20 minutes before replacing the battery on a lock-up.

BTW, thanks for your observations about the voice activation. Very helpful.

The wall of text is hard to read and I'm not sure what I'm wrong about she never really attacked anything specific as far as I could tell, but it does illustrate how bat shiat crazy some religious folk can get.

You are absolutely wrong. The fact is, Christianity, the REAL Christianity, that follows the REAL Jesus, brings with it Conviction of Sin.Its not the people that bring the conviction. Its the WORD. The WORD judges people. Don't get angry at the people who are merely quoting the bible. Get angry at Jesus. Its his words, not ours. People really don't like Jesus. They like what he did, but they don't want him to be Lord over them. They want to do "good works" but they don't want him to come and rule in their lives. They want to look like him, without going through what he went through. They want to "look" like Jesus(i.e. good works whatever) but they don't want his ways.He IS a consuming Fire, coming to burn up all those works of darkness that keep us from experiencing his lofe.He WILL burn it up. He is totally UNLIKE what most people think he is.(because most people don't read the bible.) And if people really could see him as he REALLY is, probably most people would not follow him.He is offensive. He's beautiful and offensive. Therefore, those who are trying their best to follow him and desire to adhere to his ways, will ultimately find the same sort of "Troubles" that Jesus experienced. Those who don't believe they want his love, but not his cleansing fire. He is NOT a permissive God. Like most of the jacked up parents in this world, who let their children get away with anything. God is completely unlike US.This is the truth. Whether people want it or not. But its the truth,there is a double edge sword to his message. Can't you see that? Its a double edged sword that actually sets people free. Why do you think he said the way was Narrow??? He wasn't just picking his nose and shooting the breeze with his disciples. He was telling them. This is not an easy path. Many would rather go the broadway. Because it requires of them nothing. But my yoke is easy and my burden is light.. but pick up your own cross and follow me. Follow my example. This is NOT an easy path. Most people know that. Thats why they hate when Christians take a stand on sin.He is not a weak and mild, milksop. The fact is, when believers teach the principles of the bible(this is called discipleship incidently) as the bible states them, this will automatically bring a collision.Because it reveals EVERYTHING about you that is NOT LIKE HIM!And this HURTS. Because the principles of Jesus the Lord bring conviction and bring a glaring spot light on sin. Those who don't want to admit that they fall short, will ultimately be upset. Its so easy, this is like kindergarten.The thing is, Scotland and the rest of watered down Western World don't know what real Christianity is, as they have swallowed the false, lukewarm, "I love Jesus but i'm gonna do my own thing. I think Jesus was a cool man but you know thats about it. Yeah Jesus is coool." for so long. Read the Book. As a side note, believers shouldn't expect to get any help from the world's system. God says to come out of the world and its ways because it and its dark ways, its rebellion against him are passing away. Too many believers are straddling the fence and expecting a world that hates Jesus to defend them. This will never happen. So I wish people would really get real. They aren't mad at Christians. They are mad at the God they follow.They don't want God. They don't want Jesus. They don't want the light or righteousness. Their gods are their own passions and they like them that way. Its very obvious. Its really quite simple. For goodness sake.. no more lukewarmness! Either be Hot or Cold for Jesus. We already know Edinburgh Uni is decidedly cold. There can be no common ground.Light and darkness can have no fellowship.Why is this so surprising to people? This is the truth.

Hmm, so the bigwigs have finally figured out that if they give us high quality content without restrictions on what we can play it on, we may actually WANT to pay for it!? Now they just have to offer a free iphone when you hit your 1000th purchase.

Indeed blind loyalty and ignoring the moral standards that makes us better than them is very important when trying to win the hearts and minds of those whose family we kill while they lay wounded and are no longer a threat.

They should pin a medal on that soldier. The enemy combatant moved his hand. Stupid man!

BTW, we should care a little more about our brave Marines and soldiers over there and less about the pukes trying to kill them.

Hey, Tunk. Maybe you just have weak arms and a strong diaphragm.

A sharp blow with the side of a open hand (aka chop) to the diaphragm will cure hiccups instantly.
No pain unless you got strong arms or weak diaphragm

Thanks for the feedback Seb, I've fixed the bug causing the Status bar icon preference not to persist between sessions, you should just be able to update through Firefox or you can get the current version from http://hidefindbar.jaredmcateer.com

The Hide Find Bar extension is compatible with all versions of 1.5 and 2.0. It will probably work in older versions as well as 3.0 but haven't tested it yet.

Hi Jared,

Thanks for this extension, it's doing exactly what I need.
I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.3 under Ubuntu 7.04.
I want to disable the status bar icon, but it keeps reappearing when I restart Firefox.

I'm just wondering if it is Firefox 2.x compliant.

Thanks !
