I broke my leg wanna see?

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

A couple days after posting the previous artcile about the veteren that overcame his disabilities I have disabled myself, I wouldn’t call it irony, but it’s definitely eeriey. About 3 weeks ago three of my friends and I signed up at a gym, to get fit and make sure we didn’t get lazy throughout winter. It was a great setup, about 4 days a week, we would all go to the gym, pair off and do some weight training. Ajay and I worked through the main muscle groups throughout the week, while Devin and Dale did mostly cardio and circuit training. Then after 45 min to and hour we would go play squash, this gym had courts in the facility, for about another hour or so. It was a great balance, building muscle, burning calories and tonnes of fun. Then on thursday in the midst of an intense tie breaking game between Ajay and I tradegy struck. I was up by one point like 6-5 or something like that, squash goes to 11 and you need to win by 2 points. I planted my right foot, wound up a big back hand return and crushed it, while my arm was following through, I looked back to spot where the ball was going to see Ajay’s return and I lost balance. As I’m falling to the ground, I hear and feel this sickening crunch and the most intense pain I’ve ever felt in my life. I knew right away I had broken my leg, even though I never had a broken bone before there was no mistaking that feeling. The following is a transcribe of what happened:

Truly Inspiring – “Disabled” veteran re-enables himself

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

From: YRG Workout
Arthur Boorman is 5′8” 297 pounds and 47 years old. Arthur’s has 3 kids, 5 cats and works over 70 hours a week as a special educator where he teaches kids and adults with learning disabilities. In Arthur’s youth he was paratrooper with US Army. After 14 years of service and well over 500 jumps he was ready to retire. That’s when he got called up for the first Gulf War. Unfortunately Arthur was sent home early from that War “permanently” disabled. Allowing his injuries to dictate his life, he gained more and more weight until it eventually threatened his life. Something had to change, so Arthur tried YRG. He listened to the inspirational CD that Dallas Page included with the order entitled “Own Your Life”. Arthur began his exercise program, changed his eating habits and took control of his lifestyle. In 10 months he lost 120 pounds. His braces and crutches have been retired. He went from needing straps and a chair to achieve the YRG positions, now he teaches them. Arthur is an inspiration to all that know him, press play on the video that chronicles his journey, and let him inspire you too! [ed: cleaned up the text some]

Keepers of the Bandwidth

So I bought an enclosure for old ATA HDDs to help my friend get some files of his ancient computer that blew up. When I got home I decided to see what was on 3 old HDDs that I had laying around. A lot of memories were found within, pictures, old projects, videos, etc. Amongst the flotsam and jetsam I came across the following gem. It was an internal commercial used by Telus back when I first started working there circa 2003. It was horrible then and it’s horrible now, a lot of laughs were had at it’s expense. I don’t remember the whole story but I believe it was some film student working as a telemonkey in one of the centers that was drafted to make this video. I’m not saying it was his fault, because the source material wasn’t great to begin with, but the matrix/mission impossible motif was absolutely campy and the “rap” was down right edutational. I bet the guy does his best to not acknowledge this dark point in his professional life and I would not blame him.

On atheism; I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Most of my friends know that I’m atheist, or at least non-religious. My religious friends tend to wonder why I am so defensive about atheism and have a distaste for religion in my tone when I speak about it. I’ve gone blue trying to explain why I feel they are irrational, and even had them admit their beliefs are irrational but they still couldn’t understand my position. I came across this article on Craigslist today and I have to say this is the most succinct, non-confrontational piece explaining my position I could even have hoped for.

Anti-atheist Backlash on R&R Date: 2008-03-05, 12:11PM PST

I’ve noticed a recent trend on Rants and Raves where certain Christian posters are attacking atheists while strangely choosing to ignore all other brands of non-Christians. Why is this? Are these armchair disciples more concerned about saving an atheist’s soul than that of a Buddhist, Hindu, Jew, or Muslim? Sounds fairly selective to me.

I think I know what’s going on here…

We did not invent the algorithm. The algorithm killed Jeeves. The algorithm constantly finds Jesus. This is not the algorithm. This is close.
